Verse

 From this chair I see the sun

 Bathe me in shadows of Commission flats.

 Though the cold does touch my arm,

 I turn to face the fire on telly.

 A generation with our hands in blood,

 Like all the generations gone before,

 And though we thought we learnt our lessons,

 It seems we learnt them too well.

 So darling share this wine with me.

 We'll be together on the eve of World War III

 And will the children that have grown so high

 In the back of our minds - slip through our fingers like oil.

 I think I must have seen a thousand films

 Where all the boys come back from Vietnam

 And when they said they'd purged their conscience,

 For a second I thought they meant it.

 So in the congress hear them plead,

 And try and carve their words in history

 Though we all fear the loss of life,

 Our leaders fear the rise in global petrol prices.

 So darling share this wine with me.

 We'll be together on the eve of World War III

 And will the children that have grown so high

 In the back of our minds - slip through or fingers like oil.

A word on the fill's -

According to Craig at BHP, the G string is played open for

both FILL's #1 & #2. I'm undecided, though I'm starting to

think this may be the case.

Well I got your breath, [Whole verse is played

with a palm-muted A, play

But I do not breathe your politics FIG #1 repeatedly

over the top]

While you'd sing

With eyes so close together

We focus in different directions,

Hey we look the same

But not the same way,

Same way at all.

With summer painted 'cross the sky,

I see this child do laps around his sheltered life

(Hey .....

Such lofted dreams fill his head

my little one ...)

He thinks he talks with God

He thinks he reads the future

(Hey ......

Between the red brick and the back fence

my little one .....)

 While father swore that we must hold the shore

 Against the evils in this world,

If I must watch this sunset

I vow I will dream of Heidelberg.

 We fell

 From Eden.

 We lost our money.

Red flag meets red wine across the Christmas dinner,

 I dream inside this shore bound gale that

Takes me to the battlefield,

 Where I'll face my own.

 And father swore that we must hold the shore

 Against the evils in this world,

 If I must watch this sunset

I vow I will dream of Heidelberg.

 Hey ...........My little one (etc.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HELEN

~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~
Things of Stone and Wood
This is the best I can do so far. The chords for the extended chorus at the
end are possibly wrong - If anyone finds something wrong, tell me - I
want to play it right too. As far as the 'solo'(if thats what you'd call it)
goes, don't hasle too much about the D note running through it. If you're
playing in a group, it won't be missed (in fact, I don't think TOSAW worry
about it much when they play it live anyway). Otherwise you can just get the
bass to play - probably best.
 Let's not forget last night,
 (Yeah) how we drove along the Yarra,
 How we sang harmonies to Carole King.
 These three years now just gone,
 They are the legends of my mind,
 We both kneel at these rocks and drink of the memories
You are the tunes in my head,
 The fire in my ribs, .
You are the voice in my heart that whispers compassion
Happy Bithday Helen.
We kissed on that bridge that fell down
 While we held hands at the Taj,
 We've been stuck in a cave with that bloke who says 'Oi Am',
 And when I cried for my cruel heart,
 You rubbed my back 'til I felt better,
 We ate bread on the lake and yearned for the seasons.
You are the tunes in my head,
 The fire in my ribs, .
You are the voice in my heart that whispers compassion
Happy Bithday Helen.
Solo
(You are the ...)
 You are the tunes in my head,
 The fire in my ribs,
You are the voice in my heart that whispers compassion
 You are the storm on the ocean,
 The poems in the trees,
 The smell of the winter that haunts me each Autumn
 My everything
 You are my everything .
 You are my everything
Happy Birthday Helen
Things of Stone and Wood
Timing: 4/4
Intro
~~~~~~

I watched the lights go out in your eyes,

 I felt the love seep out of my life,

 I saw the truths we etched in stone,

 I watched them blow away like sand.

I saw the anger in your smile,

 I felt your hate still burn on naked flesh,

 I saw you swear upon your lie,

 I kissed the scars and they have burned my lips.

You say you've seen it all,

 But what can you show,

 You've got you're hate,

 Wrapped around you.

 You've got you're hate,

 Wrapped around you.

I heard the love professed for all,

 I saw it locked inside your front door,

 I heard your blessings like the sun,

 I felt the loathing deep within your touch

You say you've seen it all,

But what can you show,

 You've got you're hate,

 Wrapped around you.

 You've got you're hate,

 Wrapped around you.

 Wrapped around you.

 You've got you're hate,

 (You've got you're promises,

 You've got you're promises,

 What are they worth)

 You've got you're hate,

With the riff part of 'A C D', it usually goes back to a C,

more as a ghost note than anything - add it in here and there

if you think it's worth it.

THE YEARNING

~~~ ~~~~~~~~
Things of Stone and Wood
In parts of this song, I've broken the chords up into separate
measures - easier to write, easier to read.
I've labelled them as such
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Intro

  * && &&

 The stars will dwarf me,

 And the winds will scatter me,

  && *

And the earth will have me at last.

 I weep upon my own grave,

 I (will) cry for grief,

 I (will) cry for love,

 I will cry from guilt.

 And so I must ask the unanswerable.

 Why?

 And I must ask the unanswerable.

 It's in the hand that heals,

 It's in the hand that blesses,

 It's in the hand that kills,

 It's in the hand that seeks redemption,

By gently stroking the bruises of it's fury's crimes.

 This is the search for a god,

 This is the horror of mortality,

 This is the shadow of death tormenting me,

 This is the yearning for more,

 The yearning for more than this,

 I yearn

 I yearn

 I yearn

There is a high possibility of there being mistakes in the transcription

of this song - if you find one, please let me know or post up a repaired

version, this is more of a starter than a complete transcription.

SINGLE PERFECT RAINDROP

~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
Things of Stone and Wood
Timing: 4/4
During singing, the G chord is played in an arpegio fashion,
during the viola part it's strummed. I'm not a great fan of
this song, so I haven't put too much work into transcribing it
- sorry if you do like it.
Well I wander round this mind amidst the
Ruins of a lonely child,
I used to think I talked with spirits
Now I think I talk with crooks,
And I wonder if I ever did
Anything good at all.
Ever.
So I lie awake at night and vow
I'm not going to think about.
 I've got self deception tattooed like a flag across my back,
Holding hands with war-mongers I feel I've been betrayed,
Though I dance in luxury without her I'll die of thirst,
 She's a single perfect raindrop,
When she falls she takes my breath away.
 Well I advertise the scars of middle classness
Like a shiny piece of junkmail,
I've inherited the meanness
Like a dinnerset kept for family gatherings,
But she will scream and tell me all the
Magic in her magic life,
We will laugh at how I'm scared of
Everything that moves lest it crash
Into me or with me in it.
 I've got self deception tattooed like a flag across my back,
Holding hands with war-mongers I feel I've been betrayed,
Though I dance in luxury without her I'll die of thirst,
 She's a single perfect raindrop,
When she falls she takes my breath away.
Ah ..... What a dissapointment this would all be
Ah ..... What a dissapointment.
 'Cause I've got self deception tattooed like a flag across my back,
Holding hands with war-mongers I feel I've been betrayed,
Though I dance in luxury without her I'll die of thirst,
 She's a single perfect raindrop,
When she falls she takes my breath away.
IN OUR HOME
Things of Stone and Wood
The intro isn't definitive, it's just a guide - I usually play it different
every time. The chords during the verses etc. are played in the same general
fashion.
Intro
  across the bed we called our own
  She holds her fella tight they mock
the isolation of the night
  Every loving laugh I've known is now a
match between my lids
  The night is long since you have gone
From our home
Intro
  Can you feel me can you feel me
  As I reach to touch you in the night
  I'd run to you now if I could,
  (*Fill#2)
But it's a dream my limbs are still
  The night plays tricks on me since you have gone
From our home
Intro
  So I will hide beneath the whispering trees
  I'll kiss you in my memory
  We walk atop these hills of sand
  See how you soothe this shaking drunken hand.
  Beneath the burning sun
  (*Fill#2)
I felt us melting into one
  A year ago when you were here
In our home
Intro
  So I will raise my voice to the north-bound wind
  In the morning you will hear me sing
  A breeze to soothe your fitful rest
  You'll hold this ghost song to your chest
  You'll cross the desert, cross the seas
  For a second you will lie with me
  You'll lie with me You'll lie with me
In our home.
THEY WON'T KNOW WHY
Things of Stone and Wood
Timing: 4/4
Intro
~~~~~~

Our eyes will wander across this vacant wall,

 Stumble across the dusty floor,

And we will hide beneath this blanket full of holes,

 Through which the cold has crawled

 Its way into our bones

And we will fly into the Winter's night,

Our tears will crystallise,

And they will rain upon the frozen earth

 And people will smile when they stumble across them shining,

 They won't know why,

 They won't know why.

Instrumental

Helby Baby, Tell me can you see,

We're gonna soar, we're gonna be free,

Nothing they can do can touch us now,

Nothing they can do can touch us now.

We're gonna soar amongst the universe,

We're gonna be freer than the birds.

We're gonna fly out where the sun won't shine,

Shining down on everyone.

And we will fly into the Winter's night,

Our tears will crystallise,

And they will rain upon the frozen earth

 And people will smile when they stumble across them shining,

 They won't know why,

 They won't know why.

 They'll feel a glowing in their hearts,

 Feel a glowing in their hearts,

They won't know why,

Do do do do do

Do do do do do

 They'll feel it shooting up their arms,

 They'll feel it explode across their minds like song.

Do do do do do

Do do do do do

Do do do do do

Do do do do do

Instrumental

Do do do do do

Do do do do do

Do do do do do

Do do do do do

And we will fly into the Winter's night,

Our tears will crystallise,

And they will rain upon the frozen earth

 And people will smile when they stumble across them shining,

 They won't know why,

 They won't know why.

And we will fly into the Winter's night,

Our tears will crystallise,

And they will rain upon the frozen earth

 And people will smile when they stumble across them shining,

 They won't know why,

 They won't know why.

IS THIS WHERE I MUST LIE

~~ ~~~~ ~~~~~ ~ ~~~~ ~~~

The harmonica part of this song is played through a

'Wah' pedal - I think they sometimes also use a

distortion pedal, like in 'Hand Grenade'.

Intro

(Played on Bass)

**Bass line is played

This land once scarred right through verse**

With song suffocates,

Beneath this deathly sheet of plastic,

That we call our home.

Australia -

What have we done

**Chords played on

amplified steel string -

continue through verses -

same rhythm as bass**

The ancient voices

Silenced by the hum,

By the fury of this emptyness,

(It is) A tuneless song sung with precision,

A poem dead without meaning,

(It is) A love that never new passion -

A body without a heart.

What have we done.

Is this where I must lie.

 Is this where I must lie.

 Is this where I must lie.

I have seen the other side.

The crimes run in our blood,

They shadow every step,

Step lightly my friends,

Won't you paint my face in ochre and truth,

Won't you scar my chest with wisdom,

Won't you fill my head with dreams,

Won't you bury me,

Bury me deep.

Is this where I must lie.

 Is this where I must lie.

 Is this where I must lie.

I have seen the other side.

Verse

How

I

Remember the day

She danced to the rocks there at Eden

Oh Oh Oh Oh .... (BASS ENTERS)

(Play FILL #1 twice)

Still

I

See the man and his tyre

'neath his belly to stop him from drowning

Then he walked on water

(Play FILL #1 twice - This time with an accoustic guitar strumming D

on the first beat of each bar)

 And we

 Talked there for hours

 About whether

 Or not I believed in you

 And so I looked up to the mountains

 And I knew that the dream will live on

(Play FILL #1 twice - continue through verses)

Slumber

On you morning that wakes

The lovers entwined in their small tent

Oh oh oh oh ...

Hold

That

Breath you shall blow

Sending lovers from here back to Melbourne

Pass them over

Hey-ey ...

 And I

 Felt like a good man

 As I held her

 There by the stream

 And from a snake so black she fled into my arms

 And I knew the dream will live on

[No chord - spoken]

This is my prayer

Please forgive me my despair

 And set my raging spirit free

 And I will sing for you my prayer

 You've laid me in her arms

 You've bathed us in summer light

 By the look in her eyes

 The dream will live on

/ - slide up

Across this land everybody settled down

 To a night of fitful dreams

 And strange apparitions

 As we tossed and turned we saw ourselves exactly as we are

 And not surprisingly we found it frightening

 Hey!

 Well you don't choose the place or choose the time

 But history's a slippery slide

 Be careful of those nasty drops down to the right

 When your hit it must seem a pretty good choice

 For they give all of our malice voice

What do we expect if we won't open our arms

 (Singin' Hey) We're all just earings to the left of our parents

They're all just haircuts to the left of theirs

And we all wonder

 "Why do nazis grow like wildflowers!"

 (Hey!) Helen let's ditch the car let's hide

 We'll through seeds of doubt at passersby

They will cross onto our side,

 We'll sing our songs into the night

 As we cast off all those strange facades

 We'll see that we're all uniquely scarred

 By the same hand

 Beneath the same smile

 (Singin' Hey) We're all just earings to the left of our parents

They're all just haircuts to the left of theirs

And we all wonder

 "Why do nazis grow like wildflowers!"

Everybody dreams the same visions in the end

 I know, everybody feels trapped and tired

 So if you see a strange door to your right

 Then drop your things and run for it

 (Singin' Hey) We're all just earings to the left of our parents

They're all just haircuts to the left of theirs

And we all wonder

 "Why do nazis grow like wildflowers!"

"Why do nazis grow like wildflowers!"

ACROSS THE GRAIN

~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~
Things of Stone and Wood
  With the frost of the winter
  With the mist from a wave
  With the dust of the wasteland
  Yeah, I will bathe myself
  Spirit who won't believe
  In the wind that has blessed him
  In the wind that has billowed
  His lung full of song
  Across the grain, I'll find my way
  From the rock down to the sea
  And there I pray, my ash will rest
  With the waters fury ....
Instrumental
same chords as verse's]
  Across the grain, I'll find my way
  From the rock down to the sea
  And there I pray, my ash will rest
  With the waters fury I shout to the night
  Please let tomorrows sun come shine on me
  A brand new day ....
  Everything I think will be sweet
  Everything I think will be loving
  And every word I speak will be true
  And everything I think will be holy
  And this hand could hurt
  Will sketch out my love for her
  On her back while she sleeps
  While the morning wispers of
  Every single sacred life in the world
  Across the grain, I'll find my way
  From the rock down to the sea
  And there I pray, my ash will rest
  With the waters fury .... Hey.....
  Across the grain, I'll find my way
  From the rock down to the sea
  And there I pray, my ash will rest
  With the waters fury ....
FRANKIE GRINS (AT HIS MILLIONTH SIN)
~~~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~

Things of Stone and Wood

Timing: 4/4

 When he was young he walked with such gentle steps

 While leaving no trace he thought he was blessed

 He said, "I won't do any harm"

 His dreams they were filled with the forgiveness of spring

 He thanked the sky for any gift

 He said, "I won't do any harm here"

 But he heard whispers as he walked past the fake gold lights

 "You must cheat to succeed there my naive child"

 As he surrended he thought he did so too easily

Frankie cried at his very first lie

 The lie it was simple and it's produce was great

 Guilt twisted it's fingers around his heart

 He said "I did not mean any harm"

 But soon ambition replaced all the love he had known

 The spring wasn't rebirth but prosperity now

 He said "I've not done many things wrong"

 But he heard whispers as he walked past the fake gold lights

 "You must steal to stay here my angry young man"

 He said "I shan't be robbed of my labour's toil"

 And he did not feel at his hundredth evil

 Now he hears condemnation in the winds as they creep

In through the walls of this castle he's built

 He says "You can't touch me any more"

 But the cold and the hate they're just one in his bones

 The sweet dreams of the young make him angrier still

 He cautions "When you've done what I've done you will think what I think"

 But he hears whispers as he walked past the fake gold lights

 "You must kill to stay here my angry old man"

 And he looks out with scorn at his colourless world

Frankie grins at his millionth sin

Frankie cried at his very first lie

 And he did not feel at his hundredth evil

 Now Frankie grins at his millionth sin
