Down a one step

I went to the subway to play my guitar

with the Chicago police I didn't get very far

See, in my left pocket i had a bag

and nobody liked it when i offered a drag, i said

"Come on boys, you know you all do it!"

But the look on their face said, "Man, you just blew it!"

They took me to the station, took my photograph

And if you ever see it, I'll bet you'll laugh

 They call me "Dion 46501"

 Just a free-wheeling, life-loving son of a gun

Come on now boys, I didn't hurt anyone

 I'm singing, "Dion 46501"

Now back at the station they gave me a cell

it was stinky, it was junky, it was ugly, it was cold as...

"Hello, neighbors, HOWDLEE DOO!

Why does the City of Chicago have a beef with you?"

One man said, "I mugged an old lady"

Another man said, "I Ain't killed nobody lately"

Another man said, "I'm the devil and I'll steal your soul"

I said, "I'm a musician playing rock and roll"

 They call me "Dion 46501"

 Just a free-wheeling, life-loving son of a gun

Come on now boys, I didn't hurt anyone

 I'm singing, "Dion 46501"

 Late nights, early beers

 I play, people cheer

I just do what i do

and i don't think that i'm bothering you

Well they let me out about a quarter to four

they said, "Now keep this up, Dion, and we'll be seeing you some more!"

On the way home I lost me way

The city was coming on the break of day

All the people looked at me with a sneer

They said, "What the hell is he doing here?"

I hopped a bus about a quarter to five

And I said to myself, "Thank God i'm alive!'

 Singing "Dion 46501"

 Just a free-wheeling, life-loving son of a gun

Come on now boys, I didn't hurt anyone

 I'm singing, "Dion 46501"
